I'm just wondering, is it correct that Americans tend to say 'I have two cats' while British say 'I have got two cats'? I would think it was the other way round.

But then, I easily get confused about the differences between American and British English so I may be mistaken

I am American. When I taught English in Germany, we used British textbooks. These consistently used "I have got" where I would naturally have said "I have" and I had to learn that usage in order to teach it.

(Perhaps you're thinking of "I got"? This is distinctly American but widely considered vulgar and browbeaten out of schoolchildren.)
