The word "diamond" comes from old greek “adamas” (genitive: “adamantos”) which means “untamed”.

I thought it were "invincible" (OK, I don't know what "untamed" means, so it could be the same thing.)

Shouldn't the afrikaans version be "Diamante is die beste vriende van 'n meisie", or even "Diamante is 'n meisie se beste vriende"? And if we want a literal translation "vriend" (singular) instead of "vriende" (plural).

Interestingly enough, the Portuguese word for "tame" is "domar". In spite of the resemblance with the Greek word, I suppose the origins are different. My dictionary says it comes from Latin "domāre" (from "domus" = house).

Interesting to discover the origin of the name "Adamastor" though. That's one thing you don't get to learn in Portuguese Literature classes
