I don't speak English

Postby Lynch » 2002-10-22, 14:48

Hey,
I know how we always study languages, but as long as we didn't study a language we should really know how to say we don't speak it.

So let's compile a list, how do you say "I don't speak xxxxxx" - xxxxxx being the language itself... The language you state you do not speak is the same one as the language you are using... A.K.A don't say: "I do not speak Spanish" you can only say: "I do not speak English" or "No hablo Espaסol".

I'll start with:
"I don't speak English"
"Ich spreche Deutsch nicht" - Correct me freely on this one...
"No hablo Espaסol"
"No hablo Castellano"
"אני לא מדבר עברית" sounds like: "Ani lo medaber Ivrit" (please use a form that explains how it sounds)

Come on... add some of your own :)

Hey Ron, I don't know enough Arabic, but I do know this:
I/me = Ana and not Anee
Not/not = La and not Ma

I'm not sure what's the verb... but I'm sure there's no "Zain" word in the end... why shuold there be?

Hebrew has a very close grammatical structure to Arabic and it only uses:
Ani lo medaber Ivrit...

Or Arabic:
Ana la -verb- Arabia (I used to study arabic back in junior high, our study book was called: "AlArabia" or "The Arabia" in english... hence... Arbia = Arabic language)

Ron de Leeuw, Cave Canem wrote:Czech: Já nemluvím vám
Romanian: eu nu vorbesc româneste

The Czech phrase you wrote there means "I don't understand you". In the Romanian one, the hook below the S in "româneşte" is missing.

In Romanian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Greek, it is not necessary to mention the personal pronoun (eu, io, eu, yo, εγώ for the 1st person singular), since the conjugation is clear enough.

My Romanian penpal taught me to say "limba română", not "româneşte". http://www.dictionare.com/ says:
Romanian
- s român m; limba română f
- adj român; românesc

Do you happen to know the IPA symbol for that phoneme?

Lynce I've used an English prhrasebook called "spoken Arabic" its an old book, but there is written behind the sentence: "anee ma aHchee 'arabee zain" and if I have to believe my book, it means "I don't speak Arabic" But I believe you, you will know it better than I do. But I think we've to notice that sentence is maybe an vocal transcription.

Saaropean I can't typ an 's' with a hook. I don't know the alt-code for it actually. I've a big list with alt-codes but an s with a hook isn't listed.

Beside that I've used an Romanian prhase book and in the book I read this sentence letterly, "(eu) nu vorbesc Româneşte"

And I'm very curious Daniel how you're able to typ Arabian font?!

And I want to correct something, Papiamento: "No papia Papiamento

Hmmm yeah quite logic :D

I've also tried with Farsi, but I can't put spaces between the diffrent words :(

Is there maybe an program wich you can use to type Arabic. Word isn't very easy, but that's just my opinion.

I think the probability of meeting a latin-only speaking on the strees and having to explain him/her that you don't speak the language is quite remote...
Learning Georgian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Papiamentu from scratch. Trying to brush up my Norwegian up to an advanced level.
