A song in Caló called "Orobroy"

Postby Virgi » 2003-09-08, 18:46

Hi all!!
I've found a beautiful song in Caló (fortunately, translated into Spanish) and I'd like you to translate it in many languages as possible, to compare the words in Caló with the other ones.
Of course,if you want to hear the song, I'll send it to you as soon as i have it converted to mp3 ;)

"The Gipsy Language (the Romaní Language), is one the oldest Language of the world. It comes from the Sanskrit, cultured Language of a religious and literary long tradition with an important morphological and phonological richness. The Romaní Language, actually spoken by all the gipsies in the world, has got a number of dialects which have grown along the gipsies migrations in Europe, by introducing Language’s elements of the country where they settled. In Spain they speak the Caló dialect".

Bus junelo a purí golí e men arate
sos guillabella duquelando
palal gres e berrochí,
prejenelo a Undebé sos bué men orchí callí

Portuguese

Quando escuto a velha voz do meu sangue
que canta e chora recordando
séculos passados de horror
sinto Deus que perfuma a minha alma
e no mundo vou semeando
rosas em vez de dor

English (natives, do correct any mistakes)

When I listen to the old voice of my blood
that sings and cries remembering
past centuries of horror
I feel God, who scents my soul
and in the world I keep on sowing
roses instead of pain
Quot linguas calles, tot homines vales

Here's english as well, since not everybody will be able to translate from spanish:

When I listen to the old voice of my blood
that sings and cries remembering ages of horror,
I feel God who gives colour to my soul
and in the world I go sowing
roses instead of pain.

"Perfumar" has to do with smell, not colour :D

Though risking to verge on the offtopic side of things, 'sentir' could also be thought of as 'oír', couldn't it? And yet, it'd fit the composition just fine, too. :)

catalan & basque translation

Catalan

que canta i plora recordant
segles passats d'horror
sento Déu com perfuma la meva ànima
i pel món vaig sembrant
roses en lloc de patiment.

Basque (corrections will be welcome)

Nire odolaren hots zaharra entzutzen dudanean,
kanta ta negar egiten den, gogoratzen
izuz mende zaharrak,
Jaungoikoak nire arima perfumatzen dun sentitzen dut,
eta munduan ereiten ari ditut
arrosak oinazen ordez.

No, it happens in Catalan, but not in Spanish. In Catalan "sentir=to hear=to feel" while in Spanish "sentir=to feel and oír=to hear". Although, there're a few regions where they use "sentir" as "to hear", but it's not correct.

Bien, Psi-Lord y guest...

Besos

An old thread, but I would like to ask you Virgi to send me the song if you still have it :) Plus, a Polish version:

Kiedy słyszę stary głos mojej krwi
co śpiewa i krzyczy przypominając
minione wieki zgrozy
czuję Boga, który perfumuje* moją duszę
i idę w świat siejąc
róże zamiast bólu

*I'd even say wypełnia zapachami, that means fill with fragrance

(me, I liked the poem a lot :))

Rosen statt Schmerz

If there is anything wrong with that, please correct it.

Nuair a éistim le seanghuth m'fhola
a chanann 's a ghoileann ag cuimhneamh
ar aoiseanna caite lán le huafás

Hungarian / Magyar

Ha hallom vérem régi hangjait
Hogy énekli, sírja emlékeit
A szörnyű múltnak évszázadait

Érzem Isten felkente lelkem
És a világba majd ültetek
Én Rózsákat, fájdalom helyett

/not rigid word-by word, through the spanish version
Last line "Én" (esp: yo) is not there explicitly and
instead of recordando (remembering) Hungarian emlékeit is used (memories), which is not a big
difference of the meaning as in Hungarian emlék (memory) and emlékezés (remembering) share the same root...

More emphasis was put on musicality, rhyme and number of syllables/

Tagalog: I have to follow the words arrangement and rhyme in Tagalog.I think calo is kaluluwa(soul) in Tagalog.

Quite an old thread, but I really like this poem, so here's my French correction of JackFrost version

[flag=]fr[/flag]
