living together

Postby cirilo » 2017-06-27, 23:46

Hello all,

I am searching for a nice word for "living together".

As far as I know there is not really one word in English, French, German but I think it could be useful to find one expression.
Maybe in some languages in the world such a word exist that other languages could borrow.

Please tell me if such a word exists in your language.

Cheers,
Cyrille

I can think of at least three distinct meanings of "living together" in English:

1. Sharing the same dwelling.
2. Being in a sexual relationship outside of marriage (a euphemism derived from the usage above).
3. Coexisting within a society.

Was there one in particular you were looking for equivalents of?

Yes, thanks, you are right. To be more precise I mean the third meaning: "Coexisting within a society."

There's actually one English word which etymologically means living together, and which the philosopher Ivan Illitch has already used this way: conviviality.

Coexistence could work, too.

Isn't it?

coexistence
1. the state or fact of living or existing at the same time or in the same place.
2. the state or condition of living in harmony despite different ideologies or interests.

While looking for the definition I also saw that it is the name of a political party in some countries, which I was unaware of. But the word has no political or negative connotations to me - I suppose it depends on how it is used by others regionally. Nothing wrong with it here as far as I know. But if it's viewed as "not nice" some places, that's new to me and good to know!

Niceness aside, "coexistence" is more recognizable in the intended meaning, not least of all because of the Coexist image.
