And one more for Vijayjohn because it is Athmeeya Yathra radio from India in two languages, one most likely Indo-European and one tonal.

Yes.

The first one is Hindi, and the second is Amdo Tibetan (they say in Hindi that they're about to broadcast in Amdo Tibetan just before they start doing it).

This one is much clearer than your usual audio files!

Khob khun krap Vijay.

So Thai script has many letters for the same sound and some are archaic, right?

I'm just wondering why the GT transliteration for Thai looks like shit, but the one for Lao is alright. Lao alphabet is very similar to Thai, isn't it?

Two are obsolete but I think can still be found in some contexts and are only differentiated from some of the other letters by having one extra curve. A lot of the other letters are just not used all that often.

Probably because the Lao one isn't accompanied by any audio.

Yeah, it's pretty similar.

This language sounds like some germanic one, but I can't really tell which.

At first, I actually thought it was some Indo-Iranic language, but after listening to it for a second time, it does sound somewhat Germanic too. If we assume it's a Germanic language, I'd be tempted to say Afrikaans, but I'm not sure in the slightest.

I have no idea about Afrikaans, so that might be an option, but otherwise I would have said Dutch. I didn't understand much, but then the quality isn't that good either, and at least towards the end it sounded really Dutch to me. That they seem to mention Amsterdam might be another hint in that direction, I guess.

I would say "etymological" rather than "archaic".

Kind of like how English orthography reproduces foreign words with diacritics but uses assimilated pronunciations anyway.

It sounded Dutch to me and I'm fairly certain to have recognised bits and pieces of Dutch here and there, but others on here surely know better.
Please correct my mistakes!

I recognise some Dutch words and parts of sentences (e.g. douche, shower; bezoek, visit; echt waar, really true; Amsterdam; kon niet slapen, godverdomme, couldn't sleep, [for fuck's sake]; the name "Ronnie"), but because of the bad quality, I couldn't understand all that much. I feel like I understood enough to say that it's Dutch from the Netherlands, though.

I was under the impression the Lao alphabet was just the Thai alphabet without the redundant letters. I imajin that ritten Lao looks somwat like this to Tai spekers then.

The shapes are similar, but they are completely different scripts.
That is an interesting question too, by the way. How easy is it for Thais to read Lao and vice versa.

I've always like the Lao script better. It's smoother looking to me.

So it's more like Latin vs. Cyrillic then?

I suppose that's not a bad analogy.

Personally, I feel it's almost like learning print versus cursive. If you can read print, that doesn't mean you can read cursive. If you can read only cursive, that doesn't mean you can read print.

I can read both printed Thai and printed Khmer, but I've always had a bit of a hard time reading both Lao and certain styles of Thai (and Khmer?) writing. For example, in this Thai ad, the only part where I'm sure I can make out the letters is the block of five lines in the middle (to the left of the woman and just above the box):

1) I wish Thai used more spacing between letters

2) Cursive is godawful shit and I can still barely read it today and I hope it dies a horrible death
