争取 implies that for you it's difficult to write German and Mandarin* and that you have few chances to do, or that somebody or something prevents you to do it, so you do all the possible to do it.

That makes sense. I wasn't sure whether that would make me inconsistent or something though...like if I sometimes called it 普通话, sometimes 汉语, and sometimes 中文. :P

Yea we are never consistent. 不像马来西亚和新加坡华人。For them it's always 华语.

"one and a half handfuls" [languages] -> uma mão 5 digits, e a metade de 5 is 2.5; então 7 or 8 languages. :lol:

I didn't intend to usar a bandeira do Great Britain, but as a generic flag for o idioma inglês.
