Ecology is the most boring part of biology. I don't care about some kind of termite that lives on a log in a forest somewhere.

I like "octopus", and I think "octopodes" would be a badass plural. Alas, the Anglosphere never came around to its charms.

Side note: Learning other languages is ruining my ability to figure out a native English pronunciation for new English words I encounter. Case in point, according to Wiktionary, the above word has a US pronunciation of /əˌbɔɹ.təˈfeɪ.ʃn̩t/ or /əˌbɔɹ.tɪˈfeɪ.ʃn̩t/. I was thinking of something along the lines of /æ.boɹ.tɪˈfæ.siˌjənt/, though to be fair, I thought the first half of the word was related to aboriginal or something.

No, that would even imply a different pronunciation. "Octopus" is /ˈɑktəˌpʊs/ (adjust for dia-/idiolect as needed), but if you told an English speaker to pronounce it as the plural of *"octopu", I think most would say something like /ˈɑktəˌp(j)uːz/.
