American English (en-US) That's okay, I understood what you meant. You can't say *[jɛn̪ˈd̪ɪnɪlla] or whatever in Malayalam, either, but you could say "[pɪnnəlˈlaːd̪e]!" if you wanted.

Canadian English (en-CA) I've pasted the full FB thread below; I cleaned it up to make it easier to read:

Malayalam (ml) മലയാളത്തിൽ (ഈ അർത്ഥത്തിൽ) ഈ വാക്കില്ല. എന്നാലും "കണ്ടം" എന്ന വാക്ക് രണ്ട് ഭാഷകളിലുമുണ്ട്. ആ വാക്കീന്നാ candy എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പദം വന്നതാണത്രെ!
American English (en-US) This word doesn't exist (in this sense) in Malayalam. However, both languages have the word [kəɳˈɖəm] 'piece'. That's where the English word candy comes from!

Canadian English (en-CA) Really? Although, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary, that's not 100% certain.
French (fr) Vraiment? Mais, le site Online Etymology Dictionary dit que ce fait n'est pas certain.

Malayalam (ml) അതെ, തീർച്ചയല്ല. എന്നാലും കൽക്കണ്ടം എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ അർത്ഥം hard candy എന്നാണ്.
American English (en-US) Yeah, it isn't certain. However, the word കൽക്കണ്ടം [kəlˈkəɳɖəm] means 'hard candy' (i.e. கல் + கண்டம்). :)

Canadian English (en-CA) 'கல்' meaning "stone", so literally "stone piece/candy"?
French (fr) Le mot 'கல்' signifie « la pierre » , oui? Alors, littéralement, cette phrase veut dire « la pièce / la pierre durée » ?

Canadian English (en-CA) How do you say "yes" in Malayalam?
French (fr) Comment on dit « oui » en malayalam ?

Malayalam (ml) അത് പറയാൻ ഇച്ചിരെ പ്രയാസമാ. ചില മലയാളികൾ "ഉവ്വ്" എന്ന് പറയത്തേയുള്ളൂ. "ങ്ഹാ" എന്നും പറയാമല്ലോ! എന്നാൽ സാധാരണ ചെയ്യുന്നത് ക്രിയ ആവർത്തിക്കുകയെന്നാണ്:
American English (en-US) That's a little hard to say. Some Malayalees just say [ʊʋˈʋɯ]. You could also say [aː], of course! Yet what we usually do is to repeat the verb:

Malayalam (ml) A: എന്നോട് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ തെറി പറയുന്നോ?
B:‌ പറയുന്നു.
American English (en-US) A: Are you cussing me out (literally 'saying insults to me') in English?
B: Yes (literally 'am/are/is saying').

Malayalam (ml) A: നിന്റെ പശു എന്റെ തോട്ടത്തിലേക്ക് വന്ന് എന്റെ ചെടികളെല്ലാം തിന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് പുല്ലും തിന്നാൻ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പം ഞാൻ അതിനെ അടിച്ചത് നീ കണ്ടില്ലേ?!
B:‌ കണ്ടു.
American English (en-US) A: Didn't you see me beat up your cow when it started eating grass after coming into my garden and eating up all the plants?!
B: Yes (lit. 'saw').

American English (en-US) However, if the verb is "(a)m/(a)re/(i)s," then all you can say is [əˈd̪e]. [əˈd̪e] basically means "what you said is correct." If you want to say "yes!" you have to find some other way of saying it. "It worked!" "Got it!" and such.

Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) Sim, tem razão, mas eu quis dizer uma coisa diferente em português.
French (fr) Oui, t'as raison, mais j'ai voulu dire une chose différente en portugais.
Canadian English (en-CA) Yeah, you're right, but I wanted to say something different in Portuguese.
