[flag=]hu[/flag] Parancsolat - Commandment

[flag=]ro[/flag] Porunca - Commandment

They both come from "porončiti".

I first thought Hungarian took it from Romanian 'cause "Porunca" looked like a Latin word to me.
Even bigger was the surprise when I read that both languages got it from Slavic.

That's a very cool coincidence indeed. :lol:

Ecco perché in un post che mi hai citato hai risposto con "ei" invece di "sì"!

Whereas in Malayalam, [eːj] with a low falling pitch seems to mean something more like 'nah'. :P I guess that would make it at least close to being a true friend with:

Finnish (fi) ei - no, not, 3SG.NEG
Estonian (et) ei - no, not
Veps (vep) ei - not, 3.NEG (not sure whether it can mean 'no' or not)
Icelandic (is) ei - not
Faroese (fo) ei - not (although note that this one is apparently pronounced [aj] whereas I think all the others are [ej])

Is <ei> pronounced [ej] in Ladin, too?

[flag=]hu[/flag] ostoba

[flag=]en[/flag] stupid

Right now I was translating something in the Translations subforum and whilst writing "ostoba" I looked at it and thought "Hmm, there's an 'st' in it... just like in stupid...".

I also remembered the word "iskola" (school) that while being borrowed got an "ï" added to the beginning.

You've got very lax paramenters for what it's considered a true friend. :lol:

I just looked it up and "ostoba" actually comes from the Latin word for "stupid".

Therefore they're related, it's not a coincidence. :yep:

French: quéquette - childish word for "penis"
Slovak: keket - a variant of kokot, "dick" (although I've heard it only in the meaning "stupid person"). I'm not sure if it's more or less vulgar than kokot.

The first two words probably have no relation to the third, but this little trio caused me to exclaim "Oh!" rather loudly while studying Croatian on a train today (and get quite a few stares...).

[flag=]lld[/flag] jejun - fast (the abstention from food)
[flag=]pt[/flag] jejum - fast (the abstention from food)

Yeah I know, true friends between Romance languages occur all the time but this one was quite unexpected.
